- Even today there are renovations of the game starting with the 2006 Silent Hill movie, and then with the PSP prequel Silent Hill: Origins. The story and atmosphere is what grabbed my attention, but then there were so many other qualities, including the music and sound, that kept me hooked even as the series continued to release sequels.

Alchemilla Hospital
The Silent Hill franchise is a curious one. While iconic within the horror gaming space, it’s been almost a decade since any Silent Hill installment has been released that’s worthy of such praise. While P.T. (Silent Hills Playable Teaser.) has revived the glory days of Silent Hill 2’s success, it is ultimately a demo for a game that’s still a long way off. Silent Hill devotees and general horror enthusiasts are no doubt going to be longing for more during the lead up to Silent Hills’ release.
Then comes Silent Hill: Alchemilla. A free, standalone Source engine modification set within the Silent Hill universe. It is a first person, fan made, horror game set within Alchemilla – a hospital within the town of Silent Hill.
The developer of Alchemilla describes this as an attempt to faithfully recreate the atmosphere, tension and sense of lingering dread as the earlier installments of the Silent Hill franchise. I can say with confidence that Alchemilla absolutely nails this, while taking an approach to gameplay that be best described as being eerily similar to that of P.T.
This is by no means a bad thing, and the various otherworldly locations are suitably disturbing and oozing in Silent Hill-esque imagery. While it can at times be clear in the game’s level design that this was a fan effort, the meticulously, hand crafted environments are faithful enough to the franchise’s origins to pass for a genuine 2007 installment.
…I say 2007 installment, because the game is by no means a current generation game. Having been developed in the aging Source engine, the game suffers from a lack of competent post processing and low resolution textures. Alchemilla manages to valiantly overcome its technical shortcomings at the best of times, but crumbles beneath them in some of the game’s less interesting locations. While faithful art design and atmosphere mask most of the age behind Alchemilla, I can’t help but wish that this game could somehow adopt the gorgeous, graphical fidelity of P.T.’s current generation visuals.
A benefit to the use of Valve’s Source engine is how accessible this game is on PC. Laptops and various low end machines shouldn’t struggle with this game’s very forgiving system requirements. If you can play Half Life 2, Portal or Team Fortress 2, the chances are you can play Alchemilla.
While essentially a fanfiction-esque showcase of faithful art design and content creation, Alchemilla is a video game. This is not however a game of cat and mouse. If you’re expecting another Slender, Amnesia, Outlast or other such horror oriented game of hide and seek, you’re out of luck.
Alchemilla primarily consists of puzzling exploration and exploration driven ‘logic’ puzzles. In the same vein as P.T., the game throws nonsensical ‘clues’ at you and expects you to interpret them correctly to uncover some particularly obscure solutions. It’s very easy to get lost within the sprawling hospital, and even easier to get lost within its many conundrums. I hesitantly advise against using a walkthrough, but one may be needed for some of the game’s more convoluted puzzles.
Skyrim se fps fix. Unfortunately, in its gameplay is where Alchemilla can often fall flat on its face. While ominous lighting and superb sound design certainly do a lot to make exploration tense and terrifying, the lack of any genuine threat eventually wears the game’s sense of dread down quickly. Silent Hill is infamous for its iconic monster designs, and its a shame that they’re reduced to mere props in a game that shows so much promise in its authenticity. While P.T. was successful in its execution of an enemy-less horror, Alchemilla is a much longer and more cautiously paced venture that, unfortunately begins to wear thin midway into the game.
Despite its shortcomings, Alchemilla is a game that understands how to install fear (Not F.E.A.R.) in the player. Having gone into the game knowing that there was no real threat to my well-being, I still found myself shitting enough bricks to build another hospital for the sequel. Alchemilla is deeply successful as both a visual and psychological horror. I’m not sure if the lack of developed gameplay mechanics is the result of a lack of technical knowledge, manpower or both, but there was a clear understanding regarding the intricacies of horror with its developers. Essence stx driver for mac.

Ultimately, Silent Hill: Alchemilla reminds me of Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. While it has trouble keeping the tension up without a continuous presence of actual threat, there’s an intriguing story to be told and a superbly created world to explore. This is a game that should by all rights, be completely and utterly boring, but fortunately manages to rise above its flaws in such a spectacularly horrific fashion that it merely glances at the concept of boredom. The presentation is absolutely phenomenal for a fan effort and only inches short in the game mechanic department from achieving true greatness.
